A Hard Way to Go is the fourteenth episode of the fourth season of Ozark. It is the seventh and final episode of Part 2 of Season 4. It aired on April 29, 2022 on Netflix.
Synopsis[]
Every desperate deal. Every broken promise. Every bloody murder. Eager to leave their murky past behind, the Byrdes make a final bid for freedom.
Plot[]
In the morning, Ruth buries Nelson beneath the pit dug for her new swimming pool before the workers arrived. Soon after, Marty arrives and request Ruth to help him get Charlotte and Jonah back from Nathan. Ruth initially refused until Marty threatened to tell Camila that it was her who killed Javi before he leaves. Later at his home, Marty and Camila had a discussion about what to do if Navarro gets out from the prison. Marty subtly implies that she can lead the cartel for herself if Navarro got arrested again or killed. Camila asked Marty how Javi dies, Marty told her that he was alive at the time they had a meeting with Clare and lies that they not see him by the time he was killed.
Ruth visits Wendy at mental hospital and apologizes to Wendy for endangering Ben by getting him released from that place while Wendy also apologized for ordering Cade's death. She then goes to Lazy-O motel and talks with Nathan about moving his grandchildren from Ozark. Ruth asks Nathan what happens if Charlotte and Jonah grow up to be like their parents. Nathan nonchalantly responds by having them punished just like he did with Wendy and Ben and adds that he only took them to make Wendy suffer. Ruth then forces Nathan at gunpoint to tell Jonah and Charlotte what he just said to her, otherwise she will kill him. Jonah and Charlotte visit Wendy, who apologizes for how she has treated them and acknowledges her involvement in Ben's death.
On the way home from the hospital, the Byrdes get in a car accident while attempting to evade a truck as shown in the previous episodes. They miraculously survive with only minor injuries. At home, they are met by Father Benitez, who asks Marty and Wendy to visit Navarro immediately as Nelson is missing. Marty visits Ruth first to ask her if she was burying Nelson in the pool when he met her last time but assured her that Navarro will not come after her and asks her to come with them to the FBI meeting tomorrow. Marty also begs Ruth to keep using the casino as a front for money laundering and assures her that it was approved by FBI; Ruth reluctantly agrees. While Marty is gone, Benitez warns Wendy that they must leave the cartel while they still can as he believes that the accident was God's last warning for them, but Wendy believes it's a sign that they're doing just fine.
In prison, Navarro suspects Camila is targeting him since he believes she was responsible in Nelson's disappearance and secretly gives Marty a phone number to someone who can help him. Meanwhile, Ruth hallucinates that Cade, Russ, Boyd, and Wyatt are having a barbeque party at their trailers. Three later comes in and asks if Ruth was talking with "Wyatt" and wants to join her watching the pool, which Ruth allows. At the casino, Rachel tells Ruth she feels guilty about killing Nelson while Ruth calms her down saying that he's Cade and Ben's killer. At funeral home, Camila and the FBI (Hannah Clay and Graves) meet with the Byrdes, Ruth and Rachel to finalize their agreement. Before the meeting starts, Ruth demands an apology from the FBI for Rachel's mistreatment at the hands of Roy Petty, in which they comply.
After the meeting, Wendy goes to the motel and sees Sam preparing to leave along with Nathan's congregation; Wendy and Sam say their farewells to each other. Wendy then meets Nathan and Annalise and tells them that the fundings from Ben's website could support their church; Annalise is happy while Nathan contemptuously asks Wendy if she proud of herself before Wendy leaves them. Later that night at the casino, Wendy cuts ties with Schafer since all senators support her foundation, and she threatens to tell the FBI of his election fraud scheme if he retaliates. Camila later comes to Clare and the Byrdes and demands Clare to tell her who killed her son and threatens to kill her if she lies. Terrified, Clare told her it was Ruth who killed him, but doesn't reveal the Byrdes' involvement. Camila then tell them not to warn Ruth or she will kill them and their family. While Marty and Wendy think about what to do, Ruth leaves the casino early.
Meanwhile, Navarro is getting transferred to another prison orchestrated by Camila. The driver, Silva stops in the middle of the road, kills the other guard, and frees Navarro. However, as Navarro steps out from the car, Silva shoots him dead. At the trailer, Camila confronts Ruth with a gun, Ruth asks her how she found out and Camila answers Clare told her. Ruth admits she didn't feel sorry killing him as Javi killed Wyatt, and Camila shoots and kills her.
After the fundraising event, The Byrdes return home only to find Mel has broken in and recovered the cookie jar that contains Ben's ashes. He vows to bring the Byrdes to justice but Jonah comes outside with a shotgun. The screen fades to black as a gunshot is heard.
