The Big Sleep is the eigth episode of the second season of Ozark. It aired on August 31, 2018.

Synopsis[]

Darlene makes one too many rash moves. Marty tries to free Rachel from Agent Petty's grasp. Jonah helps his mom force Wilkes to continue his support.

Plot[]

With Roy no longer giving Rachel drugs, she buys heroin and overdoses. The heroin distributed by the Navarros is laced with fentanyl, and numerous ODs are traced to the Snells. Darlene spiked it as revenge for the cartel's insistence on burning the poppy field.

In a DEA meet discussing the rash of overdose deaths due to the fentanyl-laced heroin deaths, Petty deduces that although Navarro dope, the regional pattern means that it must be from the Ozark supply. Independently, Helen's crew comes to the same conclusion. After a DEA raid on Amos' auto shop/drug distribution hub, Helen bails him out of jail. Taking him back to the shop, he is bound and tortured until he eventually admits to cutting the heroin with inert powder. He is then killed by suffocation with a plastic bag.

Ruth engages the funeral home operator with a ruse that she's interested in that business as a career. In reality, her motive was observing the security system, including the keypad code used to disable the alarm. Later, she confronts Marty at his office, demanding her office back. He concedes without argument. After he leaves, she searches the office, eventually finding the keys to the funeral home. That night, Ruth and Cade break into the funeral home, thoroughly searching the empty caskets, but finding nothing. Furious, Cade turns on Ruth, accusing her of being worthless and striking her across the face before leaving.

Wyatt is expelled for aiding Jonah during a school fight, but Marty gets it rescinded, keeping Wyatt's chances for admission to the University of Missouri alive.

After he shows a longing for a rare book, Charlotte steals it for Wyatt. He rejects the gift, citing the disparity in punishment if a Langmore is blamed instead of someone like her.

Wendy withdraws $1.8 million to use the laundering network Jonah created to donate to Wilkes' charity. When Wendy informs him that he accepted cartel money, he realizes he has been blackmailed into continuing to support the casino project.

Marty is sent a video from Helen showing Roy's addict mother being supplied and injected with heroin by a Navarro associate. Showing her willing compliance, his mother calls him an "angel." Marty shows this video to Roy, demanding that the drop all charges against Rachel. Marty takes cash, now hidden in Buddy's mausoleum, to send Rachel to Miami for addiction treatment.

Charlotte informs her parents of her desire for emancipation, to their disbelief.

After leaving a fried chicken fundraising dinner, Jacob & Darlene are driven away by their driver. They encounter a truck blocking the road; a vehicle comes from behind and shoots up the Snell's car.
