The Cousin of Death is the eighth episode of the fourth season of Ozark. It is the first episode of Part 2 of Season 4. It aired on April 29, 2022 on Netflix.
Synopsis[]
Devastated by a tremendous loss, Ruth heads to Chicago to enact revenge as Marty tries to talk her out of doing something she may regret.
Plot[]
Ruth drives away, still crying of Wyatt's death while reminiscing their days together back in the trailer; smoking weed, guessing the song's name and wondering what they would do if they rich. Back at Byrde's house, Marty and Wendy argue about Ruth's plan of killing Javi. Marty wants to warn Clare while Wendy suggest not to since it will jeopardize their business. Ruth later goes to Jonah and Charlotte at Lazy-O motel and begs them for information on Javi's whereabouts. Sympathize by Ruth's loss, Charlotte tells her Javi will be meeting with her parents and Clare at Shaw Medical's Chicago headquarters the next day while Jonah provides her with Javi's picture he took from his business school website. Ruth later steals a car plate and goes to Kansas City to request a gun from Frank Jr.
During her trip to Chicago, Marty tried to call Ruth in which Ruth ignores his call. She later daydreaming about killing Javi in the street until Marty's second call snaps her out. Marty begs Ruth not to kill Javi, which Ruth blatantly refused. in Chicago, Ruth spotted Marty and Wendy and follows them while also identifies Javi. in Shaw Medical Centre, Javi agrees to become Clare's main supplier in exchange for stock options in Shaw Medical on behalf of his mother Camila, who has taken over the cartel's operations with Navarro in prison. Clare initially refused, and Javi gave them deadline until tomorrow to decide. When Javi leaves the office, Ruth got out from her car and stalked him but later backs out.
Marty spots Ruth on the streets after the meeting and calls her again on the phone. He scolded her for her attempt of killing Javi and begs her again to go home. Ruth later express her hatred to the Byrdes in Wyatt's voicemail and daydreams of her killing Marty and Wendy. Later that night, Javi had dinner with his former business school professor at restaurant who wants to asked that if Javi's tile business could donate some of his funds. Javi is skeptical however, since the professor used to belittle him when he was still in school and later beats him in revenge at the toilet. Three calls Ruth and asking if she know who killed Wyatt, Ruth said yes. Three begs her to come home and not to kill Javi as he claim Wyatt doesn't want her to avenge him. She dreaming again back when she was a child and sleeping with Wyatt together at their trailer's roof as their parents were arguing.
Ruth later corners the Byrdes and Clare at dinner, she forces Clare to take them to her office and threatened to kill her if she refused, which all three of them reluctantly complies. At the office, she then demands that they call Javi, prompting Marty to beg her again not to doing this, because if Javi dies his family will be in danger. Unconvinced, Ruth condemns Marty and Wendy and even revealing the depths of the Byrdes' criminal history to Clare. Wendy relents and calls Javi over, under the pretense that Clare agreed to his terms. Ruth shoots him dead as soon as he arrives, then silently leaves the office and returns home while the Byrdes and Clare clean up the scene.
