The Toll is the tenth and final episode of the first season of Ozark. It aired on July 21, 2017.
Synopsis[]
During his next sermon, Mason falters. Wendy and the kids are caught trying to flee their home. Marty brokers a deal between Jacob and Del.
Plot[]
The Byrdes try to be supportive of Wyatt and his brother Three, but Wyatt suspects Marty killed Russ and Boyd.
Mason's conscience renders him unable to preach on the lake. He arrives home to find the Snells retaliated; Grace is gone, but he discovers a newborn. Later, the Sherriff visits the Snells to inform them that that Mason is accusing them of having cut the baby out of his wife's body. The Snells question whether there's a body or a crime scene, to both of which the Sherriff answers "No." Before leaving, he mentions that he passed Marty Byrde leaving as he was coming in, asking what their business with Marty is. They reply that he owes them a debt. When the Sherriff asks "How much?", they reply "More than you."
Marty decides it is not safe if his family stays. Garcia, the cartel operative intervenes to keep them from leaving. Jonah sneaks out and returns with his rifle. When he attempts to shoot Garcia, the gun clicks but doesn't fire, because Buddy unloaded it. Buddy holds a shotgun on Garcia as Wendy and the children flee. When they're scrambling to get in the car, the house's front window explodes from a shotgun blast.
When Marty returns to the house, he finds the dead Garcia and Buddy sitting outside, breathing heavily from his oxygen system. They take the body to the funeral home to cremate it, but Marty doesn't know how to operate the oven and begins watching YouTube videos to learn.
Rachel finds part of the $50 million, which she takes, putting it in the laundry bag from the room-cleaning cart. When she returns to the restaurant, Del is waiting, asking about Marty. When she says that she doesn't know his whereabouts, Del leaves, but is observed by a grieving Petty, drinking beer near the dock.
Del tortures Marty to find out where Garcia is. Marty never cracks, but he does divulge the Snell's heroin operation and hints to a plan that benefits everyone involved.
They go together to the Snell ranch, where Marty lays out a plan to use the cartel to distribute Snell heroin. His idea involves damming a tributary of the Missouri river, flooding a portion of the Snell's land and building a floating casino on it. Del is intrigued and intends to explain away Garcia's death if there's a deal. Del and the Snells agree, but after the deal is done, Del remarks under his breath at his surprise at making a deal with "rednecks." When Darlene asks him to repeat it, he does. She then kills him with a shotgun blast.
On the run, Wendy and the children decide to return and face the risks with Marty rather than flee without him.
